Warming the body with needle head moxa

Needle head moxa is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves using moxa to warm specific points on the body. This practice is believed to have many benefits for the body, boosting the immune system as well as relieving pain and stress.

  • Boosting the immune system by improving circulation and stimulating the body's natural healing response.  Research suggests use of moxa to warm acupuncture points, can have immune-modulating effects.  The body anticipates a mild burn injury when stimulated by the moxa and thereby activates the body's immune system, causing the release of cytokines and other immune molecules.

    • For example, a 2014 study published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine found that moxibustion on the acupoint ST36 (located on the lower leg) increased the production of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), both of which are involved in the immune response.

  • Relieving pain and stress: Warming the kidneys with needle head moxa is thought to help relieve lower back pain, menstrual cramps, and other conditions that may be caused by kidney imbalances. It may also promote relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety.

  • Enhancing energy levels: By strengthening the body's "life force" or Qi, warming the kidneys with needle head moxa may help to increase overall energy levels and stamina.

The use of acupuncture and moxa to warm the body is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, which views the body as a complex system of energy channels (meridians) and vital substances (Qi, blood and body fluids). According to this theory, imbalances in these channels and substances can lead to disease and dysfunction.

Needle head moxa stimulates acupoints on the body with warmth, thereby promoting improved circulation and enhancing the body's natural healing response.
